Syros
Island Greece
Syros, between Kythnos and Mykonos, is the capital of the
Cyclades. It has an area of 96 square kilometers and a coastline of 87
kilometers. Although not particularly touristy it is the central hub of the
Cyclades because the majority of boats to any of the islands tend to make a stop
here. It is an island with a rich history, and its monuments, lush landscapes
and beautiful beaches offer visitors the chance to enjoy a multi-faceted
holiday. The island was already inhabited in Neolithic times. Later the
Phoenicians and the Ionians moved in. Under Roman domination the island enjoyed
great prosperity. In 1207 it was included in the duchy of Naxos, and was
administered by the Venetians before falling into the hands of the Turks in
1537. For a long time Syros served as a refuge for Catholics from the
neighboring islands and became the Aegean's bastion of Catholism, under the
protection of the French monarchy. Nowadays, 45 per cent of Greek Catholics are
concentrated there.
